Future Educators of America (FEA) Club Visit to Shippensburg University

Dates/Time:
December 3, 2004

Details:
Eleven 9th graders, members of the Future Educators of America (FEA) chapter at John Harris High School in Harrisburg, visited Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania (SU) for a day that focused on careers in education. The students were accompanied by FEA Club sponsor, Michelle Felton, and PA State GEAR UP Direct Services Coordinator Steve Little.

Dr. Peggy Hockersmith, Associate Dean of the College of Education & Human Services greeted the students to the campus and gave a brief overview of teacher education at SU. Dean Robert Bartos welcomed the students, as well.

After a general orientation session by Shippensburg PA State GEAR UP Coordinator, Becky Mercado, GEAR UP ShipMates (volunteer students from the College of Education) sat in small groups with the FEA members to discuss preparing for college. Topics included the importance of good grades in high school, how to apply for scholarships, dorm life, and class scheduling. ShipMates shared personal experiences about their decision to attend Shippensburg.

Dr. Mary Kilgore and Dr. Kent Cristman invited the students and ShipMates to attend their classes in Educational Psychology or Early Childhood Education. After class, the FEA members toured the campus and then again met their ShipMates for lunch in Kriner Dining Hall. Following lunch, Dr. Phillip Diller, Director of the Grace B. Luhrs Lab School on campus, provided information and a tour of the facility in which education majors at SU observe and assist teaching in kindergarten through fifth-grade classrooms.

The Harrisburg students were excited about being on campus and experiencing college life for the day. In particular, these young future educators expressed enjoyment at seeing how the university prepares students for teaching. The FEA Club is looking forward to returning to Shippensburg in the spring, but in the meantime, some students and their ShipMates plan to keep in contact through e-mail.
