On Saturday, October 14th, members of the Harrisburg School District
Future Educators of America (FEA) chapter served as volunteers at the
Annual Children's Literacy Festival. The Children's Literacy Festival
is an annual event sponsored by the American Literacy Corporation (ALC)
to promote literacy among young children. The event which was held at
Strawberry Square in Harrisburg, PA, attracted hundreds of young children
from Harrisburg and surrounding areas.
FEA members volunteered in the Shark 3-D reading station and in the
Guest Reader reading station. In the Shark 3-D station, three FEA students
provided the children with 3-D glasses to view and read about the fascinating
lives of sharks displayed in 3-D. In the Guest Reader reading station,
FEA members read stories to children with great enthusiasm. Children
and FEA members picked out their favorite children's book and read out
loud in a quiet corner at the festival. The children were entertained
and engaged by the readings of the FEA members.
The Harrisburg FEA chapter has been in existence in the Harrisburg
School District for three years and is funded through PA State Gear
Up. Currently, there are approximately 15 members in the Harrisburg
School District FEA chapter. For more information on FEA membership
and activities, contact Michelle Felton (FEA advisor) at mfelton@hbgsd.k12.pa.us.
