Shippensburg University's Honors Program is looking forward to hosting
fifty 7th grade Harrisburg GEAR UP students on Saturday, November 1st
for Excitement in Education. Designed to introduce middle school students
to a college atmosphere, the focus of "E-squared" (E2)
is to put a creative spin on learning as the participants engage in
hands-on lessons and activities. Students choose from several course
offerings during the one-day event. In addition, all students are guided
on a tour of the campus and treated to lunch, which they enjoy while
interacting informally with the college students. Students in the SU
Honors Program organize, plan and implement all aspects of E2
as a service to the Harrisburg Schools.
The GEAR UP staff is happy to arrange for our students to attend this
valuable campus experience. After the success of our collaboration last
spring, the Honors Program will offer the program twice this year, more
than doubling the number of students who are able to participate.
Last year’s participants expressed their enjoyment of touring
the campus and “being taught in a fun way.” One teacher
chaperone remarked that the reading and writing strategies taught in
one session “provoked students to stretch their imaginations without
pressure,” and indicated she would encourage students to attend
in the future.
