All Harrisburg 7th grade PA State GEAR UP students will attend a Career
Exploration Day at the Wildwood Conference Center on the Harrisburg
Area Community College campus this April. Students from William Penn,
Melrose, Steele and Shimmell will visit the campus on April 14; Downey
Woodward, Foose, Lincoln and Scott schools will attend on April 19;
and, Riverside, Camp Curtin, Hamilton and Marshall schools will visit
have their career day on April 28.
PA State GEAR UP is partnering with Leadership Harrisburg Area to provide
these events for the Harrisburg students. Members of Leadership Harrisburg
Area are contributing approximately 150 collective hours to design,
plan and implement these very important career awareness days for our
Harrisburg students.
Students will have an interactive day experiencing what people do in
a variety of professions. They will learn what postsecondary education
is needed for specific professions and how core classes they take in
middle and high school will prepare them for the higher education required
for these professions.
Professions represented at the career exploration day are:
- Public service: law enforcement; rescue/fire/EMS; security; corrections
- Professional/Business: banker; lawyer; accountant; insurance; entrepreneur;
business owner/executive
- Human services/Non-profit: social worker, domestic relations, trade
organizations
- Government/politics: city council, state employee, legislator
- Science/Math: forensics; geologist; aerospace; pilot/air traffic
controller; chemist
- Hospitality/Tourism: culinary arts, hotel manager, interior design,
travel agent
- Manufacturing/Trade: electrician, plumber, CAD designer
- Arts/Theatre/Entertainment/Communications: newspaper/newscaster;
singer; actor; artist; choreographer; state/production/lighting; filmmakers
- Engineering/Architecture/Construction: engineer, draftsman, site
manager, designer
- Health Science: massage; medicine/nursing
- Agriculture/Natural Resources/Forestry: environmental sciences,
park ranger, wildlife rescue
- Education: swim instructor, pre-school teacher, college professor,
professional trainer
- Marketing/Sales/Service: advertising
- IT/Computer Professionals
